Compensation Claim Marevan®(warfarin)  Batch Number 35222 RECALL Update

23 February 2012: Whilst the Marevan recall occurred in January 2010, we again take this opportunity to  express our appreciation for  the efforts  of  Medsafe, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals in helping to ensure the Marevan recall was undertaken quickly and effectively, whilst ensuring that patients needs were met.

There are no outstanding invoices in relation to the Marevan recall. We offered to pay direct out of pocket expenses at the time and all of these commitments have been met.

The decision on the Ian Johnson case has not assisted the industry to resolve what is a very complex matter in the area of product recalls.  While, in that case, the decision was made in favour of Ian Johnson Pharmacy, each case must be decided on its facts and individual circumstances.

There is no legal requirement to pay pharmacists compensation for time during a recall, and the common understanding is that this is normally covered by the service fee paid by the Government and there is no legal or regulatory requirement to provide additional compensation. Therefore GSK will not be paying invoices submitted to GSK in relation to this.

About MAREVAN

MAREVAN® is an anticoagulant treatment used widely in New Zealand to thin blood to help prevent blood clots.

MAREVAN is an anticoagulant belonging to a class of drug called coumarins or vitamin K antagonists. MAREVAN works by antagonising vitamin K in blood (which is needed to help blood clot), therefore inhibiting the formation of clotting factors II, VII, IX and X. It slows the clotting time of the blood. Higher levels of warfarin in the body means slower clotting time.

MAREVAN can be used for different indications (medical conditions).

For more information refer to the MAREVAN Data Sheet or the MAREVAN Consumer Medicine Information on the Medsafe website at www.medsafe.govt.nz.

GlaxoSmithKline – one of the world’s leading research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies – is committed to improving the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer. For further information please visit www.gsk.co.nz.
